WhatsApp on your website: turning chats into leads in the UAE

Websites & AppsAlmahira Editorial Team6 min read

The simplest WhatsApp integration for a business website is a link, not a plugin: a button that opens a chat with your number and a message already typed. Everything beyond that, from a shared inbox to CRM hand-off and automated replies, depends on which WhatsApp product sits behind the button. This site is a working example: the green button at the bottom right of every page, in English and Arabic, is a plain click-to-chat link with a pre-filled message in the visitor's language.

Three levels of WhatsApp integration

LevelWhat you getLimits
Click-to-chat linkA chat opens with your number and a pre-filled message, on a phone or WhatsApp WebOnly as good as whoever answers behind it
WhatsApp Business appBusiness profile, catalogue, quick replies, greeting and away messages, labels, and up to four linked devicesNo connection to your CRM; everyone shares one account
WhatsApp Business PlatformAPI access through Meta's Cloud API or a solution provider: shared inbox, CRM hand-off, templates, automationPer-message charges for templates, set-up work and sending limits

Most small businesses should run the app until it becomes the bottleneck: chats get missed, several people need to answer, or conversations need to live in your CRM.

Setting up click-to-chat properly

The link is wa.me followed by your full number in international format, without zeros, brackets, dashes or a plus sign. For a UAE mobile, drop the leading 0 and add 971, so 05X XXX XXXX becomes 9715XXXXXXXX.

To pre-fill a message, add ?text= and the message, URL-encoded, so that spaces become %20. Make the message specific to the page. "Hi, I'm asking about the two-bedroom listing in JVC" tells you what the person wants before you reply, while a generic "Hi" starts a round of questions. On this site, Arabic pages pre-fill the message in Arabic.

Placement matters more than design:

  • Keep a persistent button on mobile, but don't let it cover the menu or the cookie notice. Ours hides while the mobile menu is open and sits clear of the iPhone home bar.
  • Add the link where intent is high, on service, pricing and contact pages, not only as a floating icon.
  • Show the number as text too, for people who would rather call or save it.

WhatsApp also offers an official "Chat on WhatsApp" button with brand guidelines; it is currently available only in English.

How do you generate leads through WhatsApp on your website?

A chat is not a lead until someone has qualified it. Treat WhatsApp as a sales channel with an owner, not as a second inbox on the founder's phone. In practice:

  1. Set expectations. Use the Business app's greeting and away messages to say when you reply, and staff the channel during the hours you advertise.
  2. Reply fast. If a buyer has messaged three suppliers, the first useful answer has an obvious advantage. Give each shift a named person responsible for the chats.
  3. Qualify consistently. Save quick replies for the three or four questions you always ask, such as service, timing, location and budget.
  4. Move qualified chats into your CRM with their source. Our comparison of CRM options for UAE small businesses covers which systems connect to WhatsApp.
  5. Follow up only with permission, under the rules below.

When to move to the WhatsApp Business Platform

Move when chats need to reach your CRM automatically, when you want order or appointment confirmations sent as templates, or when several people need their own logins and reports. You can connect to Meta's Cloud API directly, which needs developer work, or through a solution provider from Meta's partner directory, which typically adds an inbox and support for a fee.

You may not have to give up the app. Meta now lets a number already on the WhatsApp Business app connect to the Cloud API, syncing contacts and up to six months of chat history, while staff keep replying one to one in the app; broadcast lists are switched off. Check that your provider supports this before you choose one.

Two warnings. New business portfolios can send business-initiated messages to only 250 unique people in a rolling 24 hours until Meta raises the limit, through business verification or sustained high-quality sending. And avoid tools that automate WhatsApp Web: WhatsApp says linking an account to unofficial apps can lead to a temporary or permanent ban.

What the WhatsApp Business Platform costs

As of October 2026, Meta charges per delivered template message, a model it introduced on 1 July 2025. The rate depends on the template's category, marketing, utility or authentication, and the recipient's country code. For a typical small business, that means:

  • Replies within a customer's 24-hour service window cost nothing. Non-template messages are free, and they can only be sent inside that window.
  • Utility templates, such as a booking confirmation, are free when sent inside an open service window.
  • Messages after a click-to-WhatsApp ad are free for 72 hours. The same applies when someone messages you from a Facebook Page button in the Android or iOS app.
  • Volume discounts apply to utility and authentication messages, not to marketing.

Meta publishes rate cards in 16 currencies, including AED since April 2026, and changes prices only on the first day of a quarter. Your solution provider's fees come on top, so compare total cost on your real monthly volumes.

Templates, opt-in and the rules that apply

Outside the 24-hour window, you can start a conversation only with a template Meta has approved. WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy, last updated on 23 September 2026 when we checked, lets you message people only if they gave you their number and opted in to hearing from you. You must respect every request to stop, whether it arrives on WhatsApp or elsewhere, and automated replies need a clear route to a person.

UAE law points the same way. Under the PDPL, consent is the starting point for marketing, so record when and where each person agreed, and say in your privacy notice that you use WhatsApp. Cabinet Resolution No. 56 of 2024 on telemarketing includes marketing messages sent through social media apps in its definition of telemarketing, and its rules expect companies to market only to consumers who have asked for marketing information. Our guide to the UAE data protection law explains the PDPL side.

If you plan to put an AI assistant on WhatsApp, note that Meta's platform terms bar AI providers from using it to offer AI assistants where the AI is the primary function rather than incidental to the service. This is general information, not legal advice.

Tracking WhatsApp leads, from click to customer

With enhanced measurement switched on, GA4 already records clicks on links to other domains as a "click" event, with parameters such as link_url and link_domain. You can create a key event from clicks whose link domain is wa.me. On this site, a small script also sends a dedicated contact_click event, with the method set to whatsapp, and only after the visitor accepts analytics cookies, because GA4 itself loads only after consent. For the full set-up, see conversion tracking with GA4 and Meta Pixel.

A click is intent, not a conversation: some people open WhatsApp and never press send. Count conversations started and qualified leads in your CRM as well.

Ads can send people straight into a chat. Meta supports ads that click to WhatsApp under its Engagement, Leads, Sales and Traffic objectives, with your Facebook Page linked to your WhatsApp number. On the Platform, the Conversions API for Business Messaging can report events such as LeadSubmitted or Purchase back to Meta, so campaigns learn from real outcomes. Our guide to Meta Ads lead generation in the UAE explains the campaign side.

Almahira adds WhatsApp, with tracking, to the sites we build through our website development service, and runs click-to-WhatsApp campaigns through our performance marketing team. If you want a second opinion on your set-up, book a free consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my personal WhatsApp number for the business?

You can, but a separate business number is easier to manage. The WhatsApp Business app adds a business profile, a catalogue and automatic greeting and away messages, and a number held by the company stays with the company when staff change. If you later move to the WhatsApp Business Platform, the number printed on your cards and website should already be the business one.

Do customers need to save my number to message me?

No. A click-to-chat link opens a chat with your number without the customer saving it to their contacts, on a phone or on WhatsApp Web, as long as your number has an active WhatsApp account. That is why a link or QR code usually beats printing the number alone and hoping people add it, and why the pre-filled message matters.

Can I send WhatsApp messages to my whole customer list?

Only to people who have opted in to hearing from you on WhatsApp, and on the WhatsApp Business Platform only with an approved marketing template, which Meta charges for when delivered. New business portfolios can reach 250 unique people in a rolling 24 hours until Meta raises the limit. Respect every opt-out, and keep a record of when and how each person agreed.

Should WhatsApp replace the contact form?

No, keep both. Some buyers, especially corporate ones at a desk, prefer a form or email, and a form collects structured details such as company name and requirements in one go. WhatsApp suits quick questions and people on their phones. Track the two as separate key events in GA4, so you can see which one brings the leads that actually close.
